The Koreas Exchange Fire

Here's the first paragraph from an interesting article with a little bit of backstory to the firing between North and South Korea yesterday:

The two Koreas have faced off again near their disputed maritime border, the first exchange of fire since last November when the lethal shelling of a South Korean island briefly brought the Cold War enemies to the brink of war.

You can read the rest here.

My students tell me that if the North really attacked South Korea, World War III would break out, and that our city would be attacked first because we have a U.S. base and a lot of South Korean military aircraft here.  I had assumed that Seoul would be the first to take a hit, but really I have no idea.  My students are Korean, and they've grown up in this climate, so they probably have a better sense of goings-on than I do.  But then again, they're also still in middle school.

Regardless of what may or may not happen, I thought the article was brief enough not to be too overwhelming but informative enough to shed a little light on what took place on August 10th.
